What Is Mitragynine Pseudoindoxyl?

Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is an emerging kratom-related compound that has recently gained attention because of its connection to 7-OH, synthetic kratom derivatives, and federal scheduling actions. While the name sounds highly technical, the concern is simple: mitragynine pseudoindoxyl may act on opioid receptors and may appear in products that are marketed as kratom alternatives, enhanced extracts, or legal replacement products.

Is Mitragynine Pseudoindoxyl the Same as Kratom?

No. Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is not the same as kratom.

Kratom comes from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa plant. It contains multiple alkaloids, including mitragynine and small amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine. Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is a distinct compound that can be connected to mitragynine chemistry, but it is not the same thing as plain kratom leaf.

This matters because many people see “kratom-related” language and assume the product is natural or low-risk. But when a product contains concentrated, converted, enhanced, or synthetic compounds, the risk profile can change dramatically.

A person may think they are taking a kratom product when they are actually taking something much stronger or less studied.

In July 2026, the DEA announced that it had sent two Notices of Intent to the Federal Register involving 7-OH and related substances. One notice addressed 7-OH above a specified threshold. The second addressed 7-hydroxymitragynine-related substances, including mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16.

This means mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is being viewed by federal agencies as part of a broader public health concern around powerful kratom-related opioid-like compounds.

The concern is not just the chemistry. It is the way these substances may enter the consumer market. People may buy products that are mislabeled, inconsistently dosed, or marketed in ways that minimize the risks. Some products may be sold as “legal highs,” “kratom alternatives,” “7-OH replacements,” or stronger extracts, even though the safety profile may be poorly understood.

Why Mitragynine Pseudoindoxyl May Be Risky

7-OH, or 7-hydroxymitragynine, is an alkaloid associated with kratom that has become widely discussed because of concentrated products sold as tablets, shots, gummies, and powders. Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is a separate compound that has been studied for opioid receptor activity and has also appeared in concern around novel kratom-related products.

Mitragynine Pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16

Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is often discussed alongside MGM-15 and MGM-16 because all three were named in the DEA’s 2026 action involving 7-OH-related substances.

MGM-15 is also known as dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine. MGM-16 is a 9-fluoro derivative of 7-hydroxymitragynine. Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is different from both, but all three raise similar concerns: they are not ordinary kratom leaf, they may be marketed as newer or stronger alternatives, and they may carry opioid-like risks.

This is important because drug markets often shift after enforcement actions. If 7-OH becomes harder to sell, some companies may attempt to promote other compounds as replacements. A person who is dependent on 7-OH may be tempted to switch to mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, MGM-16, or another analog to avoid withdrawal.

That can be dangerous. Replacing one unregulated opioid-like product with another does not solve dependence. It often adds more uncertainty.

Why “Kratom Alternative” Products Can Be Misleading

Many people do not set out to misuse a drug. They buy something that looks legal, accessible, and less dangerous than illicit opioids. Some may be trying to manage pain.
